solid acryl shelf

date

After spending weeks sanding the edges of acrylic glass, I asked my employer if I could use some of the leftover material for my own project. As you can see, there was more than enough acrylic left over to make a solid shelf.
I came up with the idea for the shelf while practising guitar. I looked at my Orange Crush 20 guitar amplifier and imagined building a shelf just for it. Although I planned it in Rhinoceros and prepared the milling, I would have done some things differently afterwards. The milling process was quite simple, as the shelf is made up of just twenty 25 mm circular plates. It was the assembly that I struggled with. I was advised to simply connect the plates with threaded rods, but I wanted to stick to my original idea. Initially, I wanted to make it entirely transparent, but after gluing each plate to the next, all the glue dripped down the walls. Considering how much sanding would be required to achieve a transparent surface, I decided to embrace the organic look when I saw the light breaking through the seemingly melting walls. With a volume of about 0.1 m³ and a weight of roughly 45 kg, it is made entirely of one material and really deserves its name: the solid acrylic shelf.
