abstract plant stand

date

october 2024

When building a plant stand or any structure that raises something, you must consider only two things: height and stability. Achieve the desired height and maintain a flat, balanced top, and you will be able to design freely. This project was poorly planned, more like not planned at all. The idea to build it came just one day before production. I know for certain that this was only made possible thanks to my employer, werk5, who set up a makerspace where everyone can work on their own projects for a day. I used some Polyurethane (700g/cm³) from a recently finished project and cut the PU into cuboids measuring 100x50x50mm. I then arranged the cuboids and stuck them together with a cyanoacrylate adhesive. The structure is empty inside, so I cut a polystyrene plate to fit the top and glued it in the same way as before. I used tape and then spray-painted it with polyurethane lacquer several times. I took some photos and then it was ready to use. The result is not bad, but I would make significant changes if I had the chance. I would definitely spend more time planning. The statue weighs 40 kg. This is not necessary. There are many ways to reduce the weight if the planning is done properly. I made another mistake: I used the wrong blade. If I'd used a different one, the finish would have been better, even without sanding. Finally, you must apply clear lacquer to protect the grey PU lacquer.
