engine table

date

february 2024

The idea came from seeing a table made out of a Ferrari engine. This one was professionally welded, which was out of my price range. I also didn't want to buy a Ferrari engine with a trainee salary. I had to find an engine block that was plain on the top and bottom because I had no place to mill steel. I did my research and bought this used Nissan Micra 4-cylinder from a local car shop in Berlin. It was oily, spray painted with yellow ink, and rusty in some places. My main work was to clean and polish it. The top was not completely flat, so I had to file it. I bought the glass plate at my local flea market and had to figure out how to connect them. Given the glass, seeing everything is essential. Using glue and drilling through it was not an option. I used 3M Tape, as recommended. See the pictures below. This tape's strength is impressive. I can lift the table with ease, making contact with only the glass plate. It's clear to me now that you can achieve a great deal with limited resources. More planning and time investment would have prevented some errors. I didn't have a car at the time, so I carried the engine inside the train to my workplace. It was -5°C outside, and I carried it from the station without gloves for about 20 minutes in the cold. I absolutely do not want to do this again.
