engine table

The engine table was my very first project. During the winter of 2023/24, I was frustrated by my inability to contribute any ideas, despite working in manufacturing. In hindsight, it made total sense that I was just doing menial tasks; I had no experience in planning, production or assembly. Nevertheless, I searched for a way to contribute something I could truly believe in, despite my limited expertise. I spent a lot of time at flea markets and an online warehouse for second-hand items because I had to furnish my flat with very limited resources. During one of these sessions, I saw an old Nissan Micra engine. I noticed that the top and bottom of this four-cylinder engine were almost flat. The next day, before work, I drove to the seller, picked up the engine by hand, and took the train to work. My hands were freezing after carrying this steel engine without gloves in sub-zero temperatures, but I arrived at work and finished my shift as usual. I was just waiting to start my actual project of removing oil and yellow spray paint from the engine before filing the top flat and polishing the whole engine. Once that was done, I searched for a glass plate to go on a sofa table. I simply attached it to the engine with some glass adhesive tape, and the table was finished. It only took three parts, and everything was made from spare materials or used items. This project may not demonstrate engineering skills, but it shows that you can create a design from scratch.
