ring lamp
I started this project by finding polyethylene rings in the bin. After pulling them out, I felt obliged to do something with them and not just let them take up space in my flat unused. While searching for ideas, I went to a friend’s house and, seeing his lamp, was inspired to create something better. Since his birthday was coming up, I decided to make it my plan for his present. I now had a few rings and a plan to make a lamp. While thinking about how to connect them, I looked around the workshop and ended up with steel cables. I noticed the connectors while shopping for the cables. The problem with polyethylene is that you cannot effectively glue it, which led me to design a hole for any constructional element. I had various ideas involving LED strips and even fluorescent tubes, but budget constraints limited me to a single light bulb. In addition to the two rings, I had to manufacture the top circle with a ring to hang it from, as well as the main part that houses the light bulb and has holes in the shape of a 12-pointed star. This reduces the weight and lets light through to the upper part of the lamp. It was actually done pretty quickly, but due to a silly mistake, I didn’t manage to finish it in time for the birthday. I ordered the exact number of steel cable connectors, but after losing one during production, I had to wait four days for it to be shipped. I gave him the gift four days later; he was actually going on a trip at that time.
