polyurethane sculpture

This rather unusual object is another one of my early projects. It has a final weight of 42 kg, which I experienced first-hand when I brought it to the photo studio and up to my flat on the fourth floor. It’s a nearly solid structure made from medium-density polyurethane, glued together using diisocyanate adhesive. As with many of my previous projects, I only started this one because there was a lot of spare material lying around in the workshop. After getting permission to use it, I cut it into cuboids of the same length. With roughly thirty 100x50x50 cuboids, I proceeded to assemble them at a table. The assembly process really felt like Lego, giving me flashbacks to my time spent on Minecraft. I did a test assembly, numbered the parts, and then glued them together. Unfortunately, I didn’t manage to get a perfectly flat top after the second assembly, so I had to plane it using a CNC machine afterwards. As I mentioned, it isn’t solid, so I had to cover the hole inside with a white polypropylene sheet, cutting it while the structure was upside down. Lastly, I coated it in grey spray paint to get rid of the natural pink colour of the material. It now serves as a plant stand to elevate my 1.5 m ficus tree and has a small hole for putting things inside. Honestly, I wouldn’t recommend this one and I wouldn’t like to do it again.
