small lamp

Unlike my other projects, this lamp was inspired by an existing design that I saw in a furniture store in Antwerp, Belgium. At the time, I was furnishing my friend’s flat and was having trouble finding a reasonably priced lamp with a minimal metal design and rough finish. The lamp itself is just a cable and light bulb socket. I ordered these together with a ceiling installation kit, which cost me around 40 euros for the technical part of the lamp. My task was to design the lampshade using only an aluminium plate measuring 5 mm thick and a pipe with a wall thickness of 5 mm. This thickness was necessary to connect the two pieces with M2.5 threaded rods. The plate itself is just a milled circle with a hole and a small recess in the middle to fit the pipe, which makes positioning easy. As I said, most lamps on the market are polished, sanded or powder-coated to achieve a perfect finish, but I didn’t want to do that with this lamp. I roughly sanded the plate and left the pipe as it was. The extrusion lines of the aluminium pipe are still visible, extending orthogonally to the ground and ceiling. It’s a very simple but effective piece that could easily be manufactured in higher quantities.
